COMMUNITY Link Foundation has awarded a grant to a local scout group to enable them to be prepared, regardless of the weather.
Southport District Scout Council applied to Community Link for a grant to enable them to buy waterproof jackets for the children who take part in water based activities while at the group’s headquarters on the Marine Lake.
Southport District Scouts headquarters is at Waterside Lodge and is run by volunteers for the benefit of Southport Scouts and the many groups using the centre, including the guides, sea and army cadets, youth groups and schools.
Young people using the facilities are given the opportunity to take part in archery, shooting, canoeing, kayaking and sailing but in order to take part, Southport District Scouts have to provide all the necessary safety equipment, which includes the waterproof jackets.
Community Link Foundation was able to approve a grant of £1860 which will enable Southport District Scout Council to buy 30 waterproof jackets to keep people on the water dry and warm, and therefore able to enjoy the activity for longer.
Enda Rylands, chairman of Community Link Foundation, said: “We are delighted to be able to help with this grant because it will benefit so many different groups that use Waterside Lodge and the Marine Lake. It’s a great facility and is used by so many people that we wanted to help ensure that all the facilities can be used and people get the best experience out of it.
“We wouldn’t have been able to approve this grant if the funds weren’t there from people fundraising and holding events for us, so thank you to everyone who has contributed.”
A spokesperson for the Southport District Scouts said: “Whilst we do our utmost to be self supporting, there are times when unexpected or one off amounts are needed. As is usual at this time of year all equipment is fully checked over and replaced as necessary. This year we need to replace all of our waterproof jackets, which are used by people during water activities, as the ones we have are well used and unfortunately no longer waterproof.”
